We have the glowing finger (or light bulb). We have the forehead kiss. Instead of flying a bike in front of the moon, WALL-E uses a fire extinguisher to fly around in space and dance with EVE. There are probably hundreds of similar moments between the movies. I’m sure it wasn’t by accident.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta – Surgeon General?

I’ve always been very impressed with Dr. Gupta.
Out of all of the college quarterbacks that are graduating this year and vying for NFL contracts: none of them would be better than Favre?

How many billions of people are there in the world? But don’t take my word for it, see what the founder of The Weather Channel has had to say about it:

It is the greatest scam in history. I am amazed, appalled and highly offended by it. Global Warming; It is a SCAM. Some dastardly scientists with environmental and political motives manipulated long term scientific data to create an illusion of rapid global warming. Other scientists of the same environmental whacko type jumped into the circle to support and broaden the “research” to further enhance the totally slanted, bogus global warming claims. Their friends in government steered huge research grants their way to keep the movement going. Soon they claimed to be a consensus.

http://icecap.us/index.php/go/joes-blog/comments_about_global_warming/

Many of the people warning us of global warming were trying to convince us of global cooling and a new ice age just 3 decades ago. Either way, I am amazed that humans are so arrogant that we think we can change the climate of our planet as drastically as some of claimed. This planet has been around for a long, long, long time. Its climate has certainly gone through different cycles. Do we ever consider that if the temperature is actually increasing, that it’s by no fault of our own but rather due to the cyclic change? You can make the evidence look like whatever you want it to look like. I’m sure that if we wanted to, we could blame the extinction of dinosaurs on some climate change that they caused, by, I dunno, eating too many trees or something.
So far, my impressions are mixed.

When we first turned it on, we plugged in Pac Man, that came with the console as one of the arcade games. Wow, it sucked. There is this moving border thing around the edge of the game board and it’s very distracting. And the game play seemed quite different from what we were used to. (Kelly was playing). Instead of a board full of dots, there were only some dots and it looked like after she ate them, more dots appeared. Kelly also complained that it was hard to control. Feeding Frenzy looked pretty fun though. I played it a little too, and that’s a fun little game with a little bit of marine education mixed in. That’ll be great for the kids (and us). The other games were a little blah. And the free demo games just annoy me—how do I turn that off!? I don’t want to see these teasers mixed in with the games we own.

As I knew, the Arcade model didn’t come with an HDMI cable. I don’t know anything about HD, so I figured this just meant I wouldn’t get the HD experience from the Xbox, and I was right. I had to use the component cable and the TV was getting the signal in 480p (I think). I decided that I should invest in the cable and I went hunting for one.

Being new to HD and the Xbox and not knowing how it works, I figured that the Xbox needed a special cable. So my first stop was the Microsoft company store (online). Nothing. Next: the Xbox website. Aha, I found the Xbox 360 HDMI Cable accessory… for $50!!! Ouch! Kelly expressed concern about the Xbox and the TV becoming a money pit, so there’s no way at $50 cable would fly. I ended up sending a note to a distribution list here at work asking if anyone had a spare that they’d sell cheap. As it turns out, I just needed any basic HDMI cable, and 2 people offered to give me one for free. Yesterday, I got the cable from one of these fine people and I hooked it up. Wow, that made a difference!! It’s very pretty! It makes the TV look great.

Our main use of this device is expected to be the music and photo capability though. The Xbox is plugged into the same router as our HP MediaSmart HomeServer. The HomeServer has like 10,000 digital photos, catalogued by date and time, as well as a few hundred CDs’ music.

I went to the media tab, then to music, and it seemed to find everything perfectly. Cool. The interface for playing music is a little odd though, as there are buttons on the screen that have icons that I don’t recognize, and I don’t know what they mean. And there aren’t any tooltips or anything. It took a few tries to get it into Shuffle mode.

With the (Christmas) music playing, it’s on to pictures. For some strange reason, not all of the picture folders are showing up under the home server’s Photos share. I have a folder for each year, and then subfolders for each month, then folders for each day under that. At first, 2008 wasn’t showing up at all. Only half of 2007 was showing up. When I had time a couple of days later, I decided to investigate.

I thought it might be a permissions thing, and I found that not all of the folders had read access available to 'Network Service', and at first look, it seemed those were the folders not showing up. So I reset permissions for all child objects of Photos, ensuring that Network Service has Read/List Folder Contents permission. After this, more folders showed up on the Xbox, but still not all of them. I could not find any permissions differences between folders showing up and folders missing. On a whim, I reset permissions for all child objects of Photos again, without changing the effective permissions. This caused more photos to show up again, but still not all. Reset permissions yet again, and more photos became available, but again, not all.

Needless to say, this is baffling me. If I find the (real) solution to this problem, I’ll be sure to post it here.

Something else on the Photos too… when you start a slideshow, it never starts in shuffle mode. So the first picture is always the same while you work to turn it onto shuffle. And the UI was a bit odd here too. The icon shows what you think you want, but the tooltip says, “Turn Shuffle Off.” It should tell me what the current state is instead of telling me what the action will do; that way the icon matches the description. This complicated the whole problem of trying to understand these unfamiliar icons.

The last thing we have going on with the Xbox is that I cannot join Xbox Live. I tried to join but it says that I have to upgrade to the new experience first. But upgrading to the new experience failed. After following the troubleshooting steps it provided, I found that my router’s MTU setting is apparently too low. I’ll have to try to adjust this. Hopefully the new experience makes the music and photos a little easier to navigate. And I’ll cross my fingers that it will also correct the problem with discovering the photos, but I’m not optimistic.

I’m excited about the Xbox though. I think this will be a fun toy for our family. Kelly does love the music player and having access to our full library of songs. She told me last night, “It’s like having my own personal juke box.” She has always longed for a juke box. I was glad to hear that she is happy with it.
<div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:c485b61a-436e-4ea3-beb4-6067495a680c" style="padding-right: 0px; During his press conference, he discussed Iran about half-way through the conference. He didn't make the remark about Mrs. Reagan until several minutes later. So the winner is: President Ahmadinejad!!

Again, I didn't see that coming.

Sources:

http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/politics/2008/11/07/obama.briefing.entire.cnn
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/07/obama.seance/index.html
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/11/08/iran.obama/index.html

Measurement and Accountability

Commit early and often, that's what I say. It offers measurement and accountability. If I make a bug fix or create a feature and check it in, and things break, I know what caused the problem. If I check in 512 unrelated tasks all at the same time, and things get fucked up, then I have no idea where to point my finger. For that matter, I might even question whether things are really fucked up or if they are now working by design because of all of the changes.

Checking code in small chunk at a time ensures measurement and accountability. I guess that's why congress always lumps 512 issues together into one bill, even though they are utterly unrelated. Who in congress would want to possibly be measured or held accountable?

And you must go check this out: http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2008/10/15/senator-kyl-responds-to-my-letter.aspx. They're saying they added some sweeteners, but I think may people will be soured by the pork.

I still don't understand how mental health parity is at all related. And the FDIC insurance increases don't address the problem -- they might actually worsen it. If the FDIC was already potentially going to run out of money, how does more than doubling their risk help? This is rediculous.

Kelly wrote our congressman, Republican Dave Reichart, voicing her concerns about the first bailout bill. She actually got a really nice response back. But he was also pushing for the FDIC limit increase. Here's his response:

Dear Ms. Handley,

Thank you for contacting me to share your views on the original financial markets "bail-out" legislation that I opposed and that the House rejected by a vote of 205-228. I appreciate your thoughts on this matter, and welcome the opportunity to respond.

Undeniably, action is necessary to address the worsening crisis in our financial markets and ensure that credit remains available for middle class families to buy homes, put their children through college, and save for their retirement. We must also act to help small businesses continue to have available credit in order to grow and create jobs. However, I voted against the bill that was introduced on Sunday, September 28th, because it did not include enough taxpayer protections, and I was concerned with the haste that this legislation was brought to the floor for a vote. In a very short period of time, we were asked by the Administration to approve a $700 billion bill with almost no strings attached, and that overnight went from a 3-page to 110-page bill. When I first came to Congress almost four years ago, I was astounded to learn that legislation is often hurried to the floor in this manner, and I was determined that this time that wasn't going to happen, not with a bill of this scope and magnitude. My experience as a police officer and S.W.A.T. commander taught me that especially in a crisis, you have to keep your head, and make thoughtful - not panicked - decisions.

I'm hopeful that Congress will soon consider legislation that is far better than what the Administration tried to force upon us. It needs to restore confidence in our financial institutions, and improve oversight, reform, and accountability to protect
taxpayers.

While action is required, it is more important to get this legislation right than to act in haste by cutting a $700 billion blank check at taxpayers' expense. Panic on Wall Street helped bring us to this point, and we cannot let panic in Congress push through a prescription that is worse than the illness. We need a comprehensive package that helps our economy recover with more private capital, not taxpayer dollars; that holds accountable the bad actors who contributed to this crisis and doesn't reward them for a job poorly done; and that enforces existing laws while modernizing outdated ones. It is essential that the crafting of the new package takes into account the long-term consequences of using taxpayer money, and we must ensure it does not jeopardize critical services.

I spent the week prior to the vote gathering information, carefully evaluating dozens of proposals, and soliciting input from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, leading economists and financial experts, Treasury Secretary Paulson and senior Administration officials, members of my 8th District Economic Advisory Committee, and thousands of constituents like you. One specific issue that I heard from my constituents was to work from the bottom up. I introduced legislation on Monday to increase the amount of insurance the federal government gives banks for deposits from $100,000 to $300,000 and will work to have it included in whatever solution is voted on. I'm encouraged that national leaders heeded the wisdom of this approach and are now advocating for it.

Rest assured that I am committed to rising above the political games in Washington, D.C. and will work non-stop in a bipartisan fashion to come up with a better solution. But even when this debate is over, the work to fix our economy will not be done. We need to insist that there be an investigation into what brought us to this place so
that we can hold accountable those responsible for this crisis and ensure it never happens again.

We must also begin the real reforms necessary to address the underlying problems in our economy that were the fuel for this fire. We must work on a comprehensive energy policy that does not give billions of dollars per day to foreign countries; we must work to reform our education system to create a better trained workforce; we must fix a broken immigration system; and we must work to keep tax cuts in place so that we don't penalize investors who we are now trying to encourage to come back to our economy and provide capital.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to get in touch with me. If the deal needs to be sweetened, then maybe it shouldn't pass. If the bailout cannot be accepted on its own, then maybe congress should re-think whether or not they should be trying to push it through.

I'm very, very anxious about our system trying to solve this problem so quickly. They are trying to rush something through. We all know that when you rush something, you'll make mistakes. We were watching CNN this morning while they talked about it, and Kelly and I about flipped out lids. Here's one of the ways the deal is sweeter (from CNN):

The revised bailout bill also includes a "Mental Health Parity" provision, which would require health insurance companies to cover mental illness at parity with physical illness.

What the fuck? How on earth does this have ANYTHING to do with our economic crisis? Why on earth is this included in this bill? After a cursory search, I found that the senate has been working this issue for several months, so I guess they think they can just lump it in with the bailout to either A) sell the bailout bill; or B) sell the mental health parity bill.

I still don't think I want the bailout to pass, but with that said, congress needs to follow the good old KISS principle here: Keep It Simple Stupid! Focus on the bailout, and the bailout only. Deal with mental health parity another time.

Also, the "sweeter" bill includes a bump on the FDIC insurance cap from $100K to $250K. While this sounds really nice, I am sure that doesn't come for free. What's the cost? Will interest rates jump dramatically so that the cost of the better insurance can be covered? Will my variable-rate home equity line of credit triple its interest rate? And besides, how does this actually help? It might make things easier for small businesses so that they can deal with fewer banks for their payroll, etc., but it doesn't actually protect anyone's money. And most people don't have to worry about having more than $100K in a bank! Give me a break.

The Blame Game

I seem to be hearing a lot of democrats saying that we should be avoiding the blame game at this time, and we should just be solving the issues at hand. They are saying this while they try to craft bills to take more money from the taxpayers to fix some horrendous problems on Wall Street.

I get the impression that they want to avoid the blame game because they know they are at fault. They know that if we focus on the fact that they are at fault, that they won't be able to get the support to get any bailout (socialism) bills passed. They know that they will lose their majority in the house and senate next month.

A buddy sent me an article that is very interesting. It's entitled "Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending" and it was written by Steven A. Holmes. The article talks about how Fannie Mae's lending money to borrowers that couldn't afford the mortgages they were signing up for. The article talks about how the company may run into trouble during an economic downtown. The article says this could require a rescue similar to that of the S&L industry in the 80s. The article was published in 1999. The article states that Fannie Mae was easing it's lending requirements due to pressure from the Clinton administration. Yes, the article was published in 1999. The article was dead-on. The article can be found here, on the NYTimes.com website.

The republicans had several years to address this problem. Housing was booming, employment rates were fantastic, the economy was very, very strong for several years. This was a problem, and it went seemingly unrecognized. Wait, "this was a problem?" you ask. Yes, I think the economy was doing too well, and it should have been recognized as an issue. Someone needed to pull back on the reigns and slow things down. Growth like we saw in home ownership was out of control, and it was headed for disaster. We should have been able to prevent ourselves from slipping into this state that we're in now.

I guess everyone's to blame, but I see it mostly as a problem with entitlement. I believe democrats generally feel that the American people are entitled to more things than republicans do. Home ownership is not an entitlement; it's not a right; it's a privilege. And if you cannot afford it, I'm sorry, you should not own a home. If you cannot afford a new car, you shouldn't be able to get the loan for one. And good god, if you cannot afford a 61" plasma TV, you should not be able to get one on 28% interest credit. And Mr. American, if you cannot afford to make your house payment, sell that fucking 61" plasma TV!!

Darwinism Politics

So, after congress worked so hard last week to reach a tentative agreement, it ended up getting rejected. I actually found enjoyment in this event; it was so ironic to see this bailout bill fail after all those jerks got in front of us and applauded themselves for doing such a good job.

I'm also glad that the bill failed because I don't support the bailout, or "rescue plan" as they are calling it. These companies got themselves into this mess by acting unethically. Screw em. And the American people, American companies, and the American government have all gotten too accustomed to living beyond their means. It's time for a reality check!

"They" are saying that if we don't bail these companies out with taxpayer dollars, then it's going to get really, really bad. Ya know what I say? My blog at JeffHandley.com is mainly a technical blog, and I don't want to distract my readers there with politics. Oh, and don't be upset when I swear here either. Without swearing, it wouldn't be a rant!

So, here we go...

Last night, when I lay in bed and turned on the news, everyone was covering DC, talking about how congress was "working hard" and late into the night. It was breaking news, and it was a big fucking deal. In fact, at 12:30am ET, Pelosi came out and got behind the microphone and started talking about how hard everyone had been working. After her, person after person got up and thanked a list of people for their patience. It totally sounded like a series of Oscar acceptance speeches. Or you could have interpreted it as them sucking each others' dicks; either way.

At the end of the speeches, all we knew was that they had a tentative agreement because they had all worked so hard all week. They all had their chance to talk to the country about how hard they'd been working... right before a major election. So now when they leave on Monday to go campaign, they can say, "look how hard I worked... last week." Well ya know what I'd have to say back to them? "Fuck you!"

These dicks have been sitting on their asses for years, watching the sub-prime scandal put huge companies into dangerous situations. Congress did nothing. CEOs of these companies kept raking in hundreds of millions of dollars. Congress did nothing. Thousands and thousands of Americans fell into the banking scheme, taking mortgages they could never afford, setting them up for complete disaster. Congress did nothing. Millions of people saw their house values drop like a rock because there are so many foreclosures on the market that it's hard to compete. Congress did nothing. Tens of millions of Americans work very hard, every week, trying to make ends meet. The cost of living has been skyrocketing and these Americans keep working harder and harder to stay above water. Congress did nothing. For a single fucking week, Congress worked hard to address this disaster that they've allowed to occur, and they want us to thank them. No, fuck them!

I don't remember any time that a group of people working until midnight made national fucking news. But when Congress does it, wow, it's a fucking miracle -- let's give them all awards and put them behind a podium so that they can give their acceptance speeches. But what is it that they have done? They've created a $700B bailout package for these companies that practiced unethically for years, preying on the American people that trusted them. Thousands and thousands of families have lost their homes and much more, and those families get nothing; but these banks get seven-hundred-billion-dollars. And who's going to cover that bill? Why, the American people who lost their homes--that's who!

Give me a fucking break! I'd rather keep my money so that I can afford to pay my mortgage.

Moved to Wordpress

If you're here, then you've probably bookmarked http://jeffhandley.blogspot.com, instead of using http://www.jeffhandley.com
